The most recent G7 Ministers’ Meeting was held in May 2023, in Nagasaki, Japan, and as usual received widespread media coverage. Medicines Development for Global Health was invited to a satellite Commemorative Symposium hosted by the Global Health Innovative Technologies (GHIT) Fund to discuss ways to accelerate research and development, as well as access and delivery of new medicines for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Alongside this, the group considered the importance of increasing the visibility and awareness of NTDs among the general public. Building upon the momentum from last year’s Kigali declaration, the resultant ‘Nagasaki Outcome Statement’ for the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting was issued on 4 July to emphasise the importance of addressing NTDs to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

Barbara Roth from our Medicines Access team represented Medicines Development for Global Health at the meeting and she commented “the Nagasaki meeting was a great opportunity to discuss how essential it is to address NTDs to achieve Universal Health Coverage, and it was inspiring to me to see firsthand the dedication of so many talented individuals, with the Japanese government, universities and pharmaceutical industry showing the way”.To read the full Nagasaki Outcomes Statement, click here.
